The Federer Express

About this time last year, I wrote an entry just before Federer was about to enter battle against Nadal in the Australian Open 2009 Final. Nadal won that match in an epic 5 set thriller, one of the best that the Australian crowd had ever witnessed. During the prize presentation, Federer broked down into tears and sobbed uncontrollably. This coming from the man, whom at that time, was already a living tennis legend with 13 Grand Slams to his name.

Fast forward to a year later, I'm happy to say there is no such drama. The Australian Open 2010 has just concluded with Federer finally reinstated as champion with a straightforward victory over Andy Murray. He now holds 16 Grand Slams to his name, a record unparalleled in the history of the Men's game. His sublime shot-making aside, let me point out other less evident things about this great man.

A lot has been said about Federer, the tennis player, but not much has been said about Federer, the athlete. From all my time watching Federer play, I've never once see him pant. Not once. And this is with the multiple cameras following his every move every second. Granted that they're all super fit professionals but even the best of them had their moments when they look like they can take a breather. Federer, on the other hand, looks like he's taking a stroll on the park on every point. I'm not exaggerating, watch him play and you will know what I mean.

Federer may be a champion but more importantly, he is the people's champion. The fans love him, the players love him, even the journalists love him. He's outpsoken yet sincere, confident yet respectful. Just about the right amount I say.

And lastly, Federer's a humanitarian. In addition to his own foundation, he also initiated "Hit for Haiti" at the start of the Australian Open which saw himself and fellow tennis superstars hitting for a cause. The laidback event was a huge success and proceeds went to the relief efforts in Haiti. Tennis aside, he is a good man after all.

Ok la, you all may not appreciate him as much as I do but tennis is my passion and Roger Federer is definitely the man for the sport.
